Can the pieces help others?

During a recent visit to a physiotherapist, I got to learn that there was a long list of similar cases to mine. Feeling concerned about the man hours that the institution must have been losing due to such visits to the clinics, I suddenly became more inquisitive.

I came to learn that certain occupations/ lifestyles and work routines pre-disposed people to certain disorders. Examples:

  • Sitting or standing for too long can harm the spine
  • Lifting heave things may hurt the back
  • Long hours in the office may cause heart problems (Due to inactivity)

So, it occurred to me that if a campaign was to be launched to sensitise certain groups at different times of the year, with medical practitioners going round the work stations, lots of savings could be made in terms of:

  1. Number of man hours lost in treatment
  2. Legal suits by employees
  3. Training of other employees due to high turn over
  4. Actual treatment costs

In addition, making the workplace safer directly contributes to higher employee morale.

Well, I hope that the organisation will consider taking these preventive measures rather than wait to treat casualties. In this case, The pieces from my condition will save many from similar experiences.

Do we have Predestination or it is all Human Error?

This busy road junction along a Nairobi feeder road. Notice the skid marks to the right of the lorry, where a car almost caused a fatal accident.

This busy road junction along a Nairobi feeder road. Notice the skid marks to the right of the lorry, where a car almost caused a fatal accident.

The other day i happened to accidentally find myself standing at a road junction along one of the busy roads within Nairobi. Then comes this car driving quite fast, and hooting loudly. The driver wanted to negotiate the turn , without the least regard to the other road users.

Well, Lucky day for all. The rogue car managed to brake, skidding for over ten metres, only to stop a few centimetres from oncoming traffic.

Barely seven minutes later, a Matatu rams into moulds of soil by the roadside, injuring a few passengers. Lucky that there were no pedestrians in its path. So, This got me thinking… Was this a simple coincidence that in a span of seven minutes, two incidents that could have possibly claimed human lives happen at the same spot? Are we puppets playing at the whim of a larger force? Is there somewhere written that “human blood must get spilled here?” or are we so careless that in the same span of time two dumb drivers happened to display their utmost carelessness at the same spot?

If the later is the case, God have mercy on us as we cross our roads, drive beside these men, and entrust the lives of our loved ones in the hands of these rogue drivers!

Awareness

A friend once told me how a woman who had a mortal fear of snakes lived with a snake for quit some time. She was not aware that the snake had made a home of her bedroom. In this case, the snake did not exist (in her world). One day she saw the snake enter the house, and she never set foot in that house again.

He likened this to the two types of unawareness that exist. The awareness that there is something/ a problem and you can/ cannot do something about it, and the complete unawareness that there is something or problem. The later is the most common, and most difficult to remedy. See, unless we realize something needs fixing, we cannot fix it. Take time management for example. How many times do we spend with people with lots of laughter and merry making, but at the end of it, we cannot remember what we were talking about? How many times have we slept late and regret about how we spent our time the next day?

We want productivity in our every sphere of life. How productive are we as individuals? Do I deserve that promotion that is giving me sleepless nights? I know I am better than my colleagues, no question about it… But I’m I better than myself? I’m I comfortable just being better than my colleagues? If I am, then I do not deserve that pay rise or promotion. If I keep challenging myself and becoming better than myself each day, I sure deserve that perk!

May I have the wisdom and strength to KNOW what needs improvement in or around me, and everything else will fall into its place!!!
